Samsung releases folding smartphone Galaxy Fold in South Korea
Samsung has released the foldable smartphone Galaxy Fold in its home country of South Korea. Soon the release will follow in many other countries, including European countries. Whether and when the phone will be released in the Benelux is unknown.
The release was planned for April, but after the screens of four review copies broke down, Samsung postponed the release. The version that comes out now has a refined construction. One of the visible changes is that the top layer of the screen now extends under the edge of the case, so that it no longer looks like a removable screen protector. Protective caps have also been added to the top and bottom of the hinge to keep out dust and dirt. Furthermore, the distance between the hinge and the housing has been made smaller and Samsung has added several metal layers under the flexible screen to make it more sturdy.
The Fold comes in a variant with 4g and with 5g, although it is limited to 5g on frequencies below 6GHz, so it does not work on all current 5g networks. The high mmWave frequencies require the addition of other antennas in the housing.
Samsung does not say when the release will follow in other countries and mentions European countries such as France and Germany, but says nothing about the Benelux for the time being. Nothing is known about the price yet, but at the release this spring, Samsung wanted to ask 2020 euros for the phone.
