Samsung releases ‘fail-proof’ PCI-e 4.0 SSDs for data centers

Samsung releases PM1733 and PM1735 SSDs for data centers, which reach speeds of up to 8GB/s. The PCI-E 4.0 SSDs are equipped with software functions to disable faulty NAND memory chips and to divide an SSD into up to 64 virtual SSDs.

According to Samsung, the ‘fail-in-place’ technology of the SSDs ensures that servers do not have to be switched off and SSDs do not have to be replaced if a nand memory chip fails. As an example, Samsung mentions a 30.72TB SSD that is made up of 512 nand chips; if one of them breaks, the software detects it and moves the data to other parts of the ssd.

Samsung also provides the SSDs with virtualization technology with which the SSDs can be divided into up to 64 virtual SSDs. The manufacturer states that the SSDs can thus remove some virtualization tasks that are normally performed by server CPUs, such as sr-iov.

The PCI-e 4.0 SSDs for data centers come in two series. The PM1733 versions with capacities up to 30.72TB and the PM1735 versions with the longer life. Both series are available in 2.5″ u2 form factor and as hhhl plug-in card. The plug-in cards achieve higher speeds of up to 8000MB/s. The cost of the SSDs is unknown.
