Samsung presents large 50-megapixel sensor for smartphone cameras
Samsung has presented a relatively large 50-megapixel sensor for smartphone cameras. The Isocell GN1 competes with the IMX700 from Sony, which is in the Huawei P40 Pro. Samsung has put dual pixel autofocus on the sensor.
According to Samsung, it is the first camera sensor with pixel binning and dual pixel autofocus. That should prevent focusing problems on such sensors for smartphone cameras. Users have reported focusing issues on the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which has a 108-megapixel camera of roughly the same size. The dual-pixel autofocus uses a total of 100 million diodes to determine focus.
The GN1 has an area of about 70 square millimeters or about 1/1.3″, with pixels that are 1.2 microns in size. With pixel binning, where the software can use the information from four pixels for one pixel in a photo, It produces pictures with a resolution of 12.5 megapixels. The sensor supports 8k video recording at up to 30fps, according to the manufacturer.
The new sensor is already in mass production and so will probably appear in smartphones later this year. The GN1 competes with the Sony IMX700, a sensor with a surface area of 72 square millimeters and pixels of 1.22 microns in size. It’s in the Huawei P40 Pro.
