Samsung presents Exynos 9810-soc that will probably come in Galaxy S9
Samsung has announced the Exynos 9810-soc, the successor to the 8895 that is in the Galaxy S8 devices. The new chip has four custom Exynos M3 cores at 2.9GHz and four Cortex A55 cores at a lower speed. The Mali G72 GPU has 18 cores.
The number of 18 cores for the GPU in the Exynos 9810-soc is slightly lower than the 20 cores that the Exynos 8895 is equipped with, but the new chip contains a Mali G72 GPU, while the predecessor has the Mali G71 . It is therefore a newer version, which also has a higher clock speed, although Samsung does not provide exact details about it.
The Exynos 9810-soc has four M3 cores, the third generation of Samsung’s own processor cores. The fast cores are clocked at 2.9GHz and each core contains 512KB l2 cache. There are also four slower economical Cortex A55 cores at 1.9GHz.
Like the Snapdragon 845, the Exynos 9810 uses a DynamIQ configuration instead of big.Little. With DynamIQ it is possible to combine all cores of a soc in the same cluster, even if they differ in microarchitecture and consumption.
The higher clock speed of the M3 cores compared to the M2 cores in the previous soc is probably due to the 10nm lpp finfet process on which Samsung makes the chip. The Exynos 8895 was made on the 10nm lpe process. Samsung claims that the new soc also has a wider pipeline and improved cache memory. According to AnandTech, this is 4096KB of l3 cache memory.
Furthermore, the Exynos 9810 contains an lte modem that supports a download speed of up to 1.2 Gbit/s through 6x carrier aggregation. The maximum upload speed is 200Mbit/s. The image signal processor can process images from 24-megapixel cameras on both the front and back of a smartphone, or from two 16-megapixel cameras on the back.
In addition, the manufacturer claims that the 9810 features on board for image recognition and scanning of faces. The function should enable 3D face scanning for real-time camera filters and smartphone unlocking. Those features sound like Animoji’s and Face ID from the iPhone X.
According to Samsung, the mass production of the Exynos 9810-soc has already started. The company does not yet say which products the soc will come in, but because it is the successor of the soc from the Galaxy S8 models, it is expected that the new chip will receive a place in the Galaxy S9 devices.
