Samsung patent shows notch for S Pen stylus in foldable smartphone
A Samsung patent shows a notch for an S Pen stylus in a foldable smartphone. While the Galaxy Z Fold5 has support for the S Pen, there is no notch to store the stylus. This may change with a successor.
On the patent images it can be seen that the S Pen notch in the foldable smartphone differs from that of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Instead of a hole at the bottom of the device into which the stylus almost completely disappears, Samsung is considering two other options, according to the patent. An example is shown of an S Pen that can be placed at the back of the foldable. The other example shows an S Pen that can be attached to the side of the foldable device.
Patents more often do not end up in final products than do so. It is therefore not certain whether the Galaxy Z Fold6 or another foldable from Samsung will have a notch for the S Pen. Adding a notch for the stylus would also mean that Samsung supplies an S Pen with the foldable device. Although the Galaxy Z Fold5 does have S Pen support, the S Pen itself is not included. If this is the case with a future foldable, it would probably increase the price of the device.
The Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip 5 were released in August this year for more than 1000 euros. A possible successor will have to wait a while. Samsung is reportedly releasing its non-folding Galaxy S24 devices by the end of January 2024.
