Samsung patent application shows smartwatch with screen on the side

Samsung has filed a patent application for a smartwatch with a screen on the side of the device. Samsung’s experience with bendable screens should make the watch possible. On that side, the watch should display basic information.

The watch can, among other things, show the time and the weather on the side, according to the patent application. The manufacturer does not make clear exactly what the added value of the display on the side is, but it is presumably the intention to be able to read information from more angles.

The screen on the side consists of two separate parts and users can rotate it up to 90 degrees as a whole. Due to the technical description in the patent application, it seems that it concerns an existing prototype and not just an idea for a smartwatch.

Samsung currently does not have such a watch in its range. The manufacturer presented the Gear S2 a year and a half ago, its first clock with a rotating edge. This allows users to operate the interface. Gear S3 also released such an edge last fall.
