Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 monitor with peak brightness of 2000cd/m² costs 2199 euros

Samsung will release its Odyssey Neo G9 monitor with mini LED backlight on August 9. The 49″ screen has a curved 240Hz panel with a resolution of 5120×1440 pixels and a peak brightness of 2000cd/m². Samsung calls this Quantum HDR 2000.

The mini LED backlight of the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 consists of 2048 dimmable zones and the lighting can be set with an accuracy of 12 bits, with 4096 brightness levels, Samsung writes. The manufacturer claims that this results in a static contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. The monitor’s predecessor, without mini LEDs, had ten dimmable zones and a contrast ratio of 2500:1.

Samsung announced in March that a variant of the Odyssey G9 with a mini LED backlight was on the way, but not all details were known at that time. In April, the monitor appeared on the page of a Chinese store with a VESA DisplayHDR 2000 logo, but the VESA subsequently informed that that certification does not exist .

In the absence of a VESA standard for HDR with a peak brightness of 2000cd/m², Samsung has given it its own name: Quantum HDR 2000. According to Samsung, the maximum brightness is certified for the Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker.

Also new on the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 are the two HDMI 2.1 connections. The predecessor had to make do with HDMI 2.0. Both models also have a DisplayPort 1.4 connection. Other than that, the specifications have remained the same. The ultra-wide display has a 49″ diagonal, a 1000R curvature, a 240Hz refresh rate, and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and Nvidia G-Sync Compatible support.

Samsung Odyssey G9 model does not have a mini LED backlight but otherwise has almost the same specifications. The maximum brightness of the regular Odyssey G9 is 1000cd/m² and that monitor is listed in the Pricewatch for prices between about 1300 and 1500 euros.

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 can be ordered in advance from Thursday for a suggested retail price of 2199 euros. The screen will be delivered from 9 August. Samsung is currently the only manufacturer to have a monitor with such specifications in its range.
