Samsung mentions unannounced 990 EVO SSD in its own document
A support document for the Samsung Magician tool mentions the ‘Samsung SSD EVO M.2’, an as-yet unannounced SSD. It is not clear whether this is a typo or whether the manual prematurely mentioned the upcoming SSD.
Although the Samsung 990 EVO has not yet been officially announced, it appears according to ComputerBase This is not the first time that the M.2 SSD in question has been mentioned. This may indicate that it is not an error and that the company is indeed working on an EVO variant of the 990 SSD. For the time being, no official specifications of the M.2 SSD are known.
At the moment there is only a 990 Pro and usually the EVO variant is a slightly cheaper and more accessible variant of the Pro variant from the same series. For example, in the 970 series the Pro received the very fast MLC flash memory while the EVO version received TLC NAND. On the other hand, this is not possible for the 990 series because in this case the Pro also has TLC memory. The South Korean company could possibly opt for a slower type of NAND memory or use fewer layers. Another way to market the EVO is by limiting the cache functionality, he reasons Tom’s Hardware.
