According to Korean sources, Samsung is still negotiating with LG Display about the purchase of OLED panels. These talks may take a while, making it quite unlikely that Samsung will release TVs based on LG’s white OLED technology this year.

Whether Samsung can release OLED TVs based on LG Displays white OLED technology this year, depends on whether the negotiations are completed this month, according to the sources. According to the sources, negotiations have been going on for months and Samsung and LG Display are still not agreeing on a price per OLED panel.

This may mean that the talks will not be completed in this month. In that case, given the required production, logistics and marketing activities, it is very unlikely that Samsung will release these televisions in 2022, writes The Elec based on the sources.

The market situation has probably changed significantly compared to, for example, a year ago, when Samsung’s alleged intention to purchase millions of OLED panels was already mentioned. This can affect the course of the negotiations.

At the time, for example, Samsung did not have its own OLED televisions, the LCD panels for Samsung QLED TVs, for example, were relatively expensive and the demand for televisions was high. Meanwhile, LCD panel prices are falling again, which may improve margins on Samsung’s LCD TVs and reduce the attractiveness of OLED panels.

Samsung will also launch its own QD-OLED TVs this month, as will Sony, for example. On paper, this OLED technology from panel manufacturer Samsung Display can surpass the white OLED technology from LG Display. In addition, the demand for televisions is declining, attributed to factors such as inflation, the war in Ukraine and the recent Chinese lockdown measures.
