Samsung makes 960 gram 13.3 “laptop with Snapdragon 8cx socket
Samsung comes with the Galaxy Book S, a thin and light Windows 10 laptop that is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx-soc. That is a 7nm ARM processor with four fast and four economical cores. The laptop will probably not be released in the Benelux.
The Galaxy Book S weighs 960 grams, is 30.5 cm wide and 20.3 cm deep. The thickness varies between 6.2 and 11.8 mm according to Samsung. The lightweight laptop has a 13.3″ touchscreen with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. The Snapdragon 8cx-soc is assisted by 8GB lpddr4x memory and 256 or 512GB flash storage. There is also a micro-SD card slot in which a card from up to 1TB can be stopped to further expand the storage space.
Samsung previously released the Galaxy Book 2 with Snapdragon 850-soc. That model was a tablet with a keyboard cover. The new Book S has a clamshell design like traditional laptops. It is the first laptop with the Snapdragon 8cx-soc, which was developed specifically for laptops. Qualcomm announced that soc late last year. Lenovo has already promised to release a laptop based on the 8cx next year.
According to Qualcomm, the 8cx is just as fast as Intel U processors, while using less power. The soc has faster cores and a GPU that is more powerful than that of the Snapdragon 855 for smartphones. The 8cx also has an integrated 4g modem. Qualcomm also offers a platform for laptops where the 8cx is combined with a separate 5g modem, but Samsung does not use it in its laptop.
Furthermore, the Galaxy Book S has stereo speakers, a fingerprint scanner and a 720p webcam. According to Samsung, the 42Wh battery is good for a battery life of up to 23 hours when watching video. Samsung will release the thin laptop in a “select number” of countries in the fall, but has not yet announced a price. The manufacturer does not sell laptops in the Benelux.
