Samsung Display is working on integrating various sensors behind the AMOLED panels of smartphones. This includes the camera sensor, with which the notch that is now present on many smartphones can be omitted.

Samsung Display revealed the various sensor integrations it is working on at the Samsung OLED Forum conference held in China last week. The session was closed, but Twitter user ‘Ice universe’ has a photo from the presentation slide.

The manufacturer highlighted four sensor technologies, of which UPS is the most important. UPS stands for Under Panel Sensor, where the manufacturer places the sensors on the front, including the camera sensor, behind the display panel. Currently, the presence of the sensor module of the front camera, among other things, leads to a notch, or notch, above the screen of the latest generation of high-end smartphones. With the integration of sensors behind the panel, that notch would no longer be necessary.

In addition, Samsung Display is working on FoD, or Fingerprint on Display. It has been known for some time that Samsung wants to combine fingerprint scanners with OLED screens. There is also HoD, which stands for Haptic on Display and should lead to haptic feedback on the screen, to simulate the feedback of game buttons, for example. The Korean company is also working on SoD, Sound on Display, where audio is displayed via the screen, although it is not clear how this works.
