“Samsung is working on GPS update for Galaxy S6 to S9 despite end of support”

Many old Galaxy S devices are reportedly getting an update now or soon that should improve the stability of the GPS. Devices from the Galaxy S6 from 2015 to the S9 from 2018 would receive the update. Support for these devices ended years ago.

Galaxy Club says found listings for the updates on Samsung’s firmware servers. The update for the S7, S7 Edge and S8 would have already appeared. For the S7 phones, it would be the first update since November 2020. The patch does not contain any further security improvements, according to the site.

It is not clear when the updates for the S6 and S9 should appear. Support for the S9 series ended in April this year. These smartphones first appeared in 2018. It is not the first time that Samsung updates phones outside the support period, for example, the company did that at the end of last year with a security update for the S8 phones.

Samsung previously used a support period of three years, although in practice this was four years with the S9. The company will now provide certain smartphones with updates for five years. Those five years only apply to security updates. In addition, Samsung promises four Android upgrades.
