Samsung is going to make smartwatch with Android Wear

Samsung is working on a smartwatch with Android Wear, the version of Google’s mobile operating system for watches and other wearables. Samsung uses Tizen for its recently released smart watches Gear 2 and Gear Neo.

Last year’s first Galaxy Gear ran on a regular modified version of Android, but an upcoming watch will run Android Wear, Google’s new platform for wearables like smart watches. With this, Samsung deviates from the just released Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, which run Tizen. Samsung confirms the move to tech site The Verge.

Samsung is the third manufacturer to commit to work with Android Wear. LG previously presented the square G Watch and Motorola the round Moto 360. Those watches should both be released in the summer, although many details of the hardware, release and price are still unknown.

With the move, the South Korean manufacturer will support a total of four different platforms with its wearables: the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo with Tizen, the Gear Fit with its own platform, the first Gear with a custom version of Android and the still unknown smartwatch with android wear. Samsung did the same with smartphones a few years ago, when it made devices with Symbian, Windows Mobile, Linux Mobile for Vodafone, its own platform and Android and thus used all operating systems that were possible at the time.
