Samsung will invest 133 trillion Korean won in the production of processors until 2030. Converted that is about 103 billion euros. The South Korean electronics giant wants to become the world’s largest manufacturer of logic chips.

More than half of the amount, 73 trillion Korean won, will be invested in research and development. The remaining 60 trillion won will be used to build production facilities. Samsung spreads the investments over twelve years and assumes an average of 11 trillion won per year. The plans will create a total of 15,000 new jobs, Samsung writes.

Samsung does not yet provide concrete details about the investments. The ultimate goal is to become the world’s largest processor manufacturer. Samsung is already the world’s largest chip manufacturer, as it is the market leader in the production of memory chips. Which competitor it wants to overtake when it comes to the production of processors, Samsung does not say, but it is probably Intel.

Samsung already makes its own processors, such as the Exynos-socs for its smartphones. It is not yet known whether the electronics giant has plans to make its own processors for, for example, PCs and servers. Samsung could also use the new processor production facilities to make processors for other companies. AMD and Qualcomm, for example, do not have their own production facilities.

It is not the first time that Samsung has announced major investment plans. Last year, the group announced that it would invest 180 trillion Korean won in technology over a three-year period, equivalent to about 139 billion euros. This mainly concerned investments by Samsung Electronics in artificial intelligence, 5G and technology for autonomous cars.
