Samsung introduces ‘phone’ with 7″ screen

Samsung has presented a ‘phone’ with a 7″ screen. To make calling easier with the almost eleven centimeters wide device, the manufacturer provides a bluetooth headset. A release has only been announced for India for the time being.

The ‘phone’ is called Galaxy J Max and therefore falls in the cheaper J series of the South Korean smartphone maker. The device measures 186.9×108.8mm and is therefore much larger than regular smartphones. For example, the Galaxy S7 measures 142.6×69.6mm. The 7″ LCD has a resolution of 1280×800 pixels, with which the sharpness comes out at 215 pixels per inch. That is much lower than that of almost all other Samsung smartphones in recent years.

The device also has an undisclosed 1.5GHz quad-core processor and a battery with a capacity of 4000mAh. There is 16GB of storage, which can be expanded with a micro SD memory card. Two SIM cards fit in the device, both of which can have 4G connections. The rear and front cameras have maximum resolutions of eight and two megapixels, FoneArena writes.

Samsung will release the device in India for 13,400 rupees, which is currently about 180 euros. While the device falls into a line of smartphones and will also be sold from carriers, the hardware and 16:10 screen ratio match those of previous Samsung tablets. Many tablets from the South Korean manufacturer, from the first Galaxy Tab in 2010, support mobile calling.

While the trend has been for smartphones to get bigger for years, that now seems to be over. Samsung has kept its Galaxy S series around the same size for several years now, while Sony and LG have made their flagship smartphones smaller this year than last year’s.
