Samsung introduces 49-inch monitor with 32:9 ratio and quantum dots

Samsung has announced two curved HDR gaming monitors with FreeSync 2 support and quantum dot layers, the CHG90 and CHG70. With an aspect ratio of 32:9, the CHG90 is Samsung’s widest monitor to date. The resolution is 3840×1080 pixels.

With the CHG90, Samsung is explicitly targeting gamers. The screen displays a ‘double full HD’ resolution of 3840×1080 pixels. The refresh rate is 144Hz and there is support for AMD FreeSync 2 that should prevent stuttering and tearing of the image. The maximum brightness is 800cd/m², according to Samsung that is sufficient for HDR and remarkably enough, the company speaks of support for HDR with Nvidia’s video cards. Nvidia announced its HDR technology as G-Sync HDR, but G-Sync competes with FreeSync.

Thanks in part to the presence of a quantum dot layer, the monitor can display 95 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. It is not known what panel Samsung uses, but the company claims to be able to offer a response time of 1ms by using its four-channel scanning technique. Last year, the Korean group announced this technique when using a VA panel, which means that the CHG90 also has a VA panel. The viewing angles are 178 degrees. Furthermore, the screen contains displayport, mini-displayport, two HDMI and three USB 3.0 ports. The suggested retail price is 1499 euros and the monitor will be available at the end of August.

At the same time, Samsung announces the CHG70, which will be available in the Benelux in a 31.5″ and a 27″ version. The resolution of these curved models is 2560×1440 pixels and the brightness is up to 600cd/m². The CHG70 monitors are also HDR compatible with Nvidia cards, the response time is also 1ms and it is again 144Hz screens. The Samsung CHG70 will cost 799 euros in the 31.5 “version in July. The 27” variant, which will be released in August, will have a suggested retail price of 699 euros.
