Samsung Galaxy S9 from 2018 gets latest Android security update
The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, which came on the market in March 2018, will receive the Android security update for the month of March 2022. The smartphones have received four years of security updates, while 3 years were promised at release.
According to SamMobile, the update is now being distributed gradually and German users can already expect it on their device. It contains more than 50 different privacy and security fixes, according to Samsung’s bulletin. This update does not include new features or an Android upgrade; it is only about the safety of the device. It runs on Android 10.
Samsung has passed its initial promise regarding the duration of support for the device. 3 years of security updates were promised at release. It is not clear how long this will remain so; in any case, on a Samsung page about phone updates, the S9 is still under the heading ‘an update every quarter’, so with a possible next update the fifth year of support would have arrived.
Google is a big competitor when it comes to support. It promises security updates for the Pixel 6 for five years. For previous Pixel models, that is three years. Samsung also promises five years for certain newer models.
