Samsung achieved much lower revenue and profit in the past quarter than in the same quarter a year earlier. In the coming months, the manufacturer hopes for better figures with the arrival of the Galaxy S10 and a foldable smartphone.

When presenting the quarterly figures, Samsung specifically mentions the arrival of the Galaxy S10 for the first time. The manufacturer has already sent out invitations for the presentation for a new smartphone on February 20, but the type number has now been officially confirmed. Samsung thinks that the Galaxy S10 smartphones will sell well and that more sales will be achieved as a result. According to rumors, there will be four variants of the Galaxy S10.

Samsung also confirms in the explanation of the figures that it will release a foldable smartphone and a 5G device. The name of the foldable phone is still unknown. Samsung already showed a prototype in November last year. Furthermore, Samsung wants to keep users within its ecosystem by releasing the Bixby assistant on more devices. The assistant also has to become smarter.

Furthermore, Samsung says that the chip division is currently concentrating on 7nm production with EUV, but that the development of a 5nm process with EUV will be completed in the second half of this year. Samsung says the chip division will expand its customer base by 40 percent this year. This means that more manufacturers will have their chips made by Samsung’s chip division, but it is not known which companies these are. Production on the 7nm EUV process started at the end of last year, although Samsung said at the time that capacity will only be available in 2020 for customers who need a lot of chips. Mass production at 5nm will probably only take place afterwards.

Samsung’s quarterly turnover was 59.3 trillion Korean won, which is about 46.3 billion euros. This meant that turnover was about 10 percent lower than in the same quarter last year. Operating profit came in at 10.8 trillion won, down 29 percent. The figures do not come as a surprise, earlier this month Samsung warned that the quarterly figures would be disappointing because the chip and smartphone divisions did not do as well as hoped.
