Samsung has agreed with Apple that the Korean company will pay a total of $548,176,477 in damages for smartphone patent infringement. Samsung does reserve the right to claim a refund.

Samsung promises to transfer the millions of euros within ten days after receipt of a claim for this by Apple. With that, the money could be in the account of the Cupertino company on December 14, reports Foss Patents. The companies have issued a joint statement about the payment to the California District Court.

Samsung does claim to be entitled to a refund if future judgments give cause to do so. Apple disputes that Samsung has this right. The compensation goes back to the lawsuit lost by Samsung in 2012 over infringement of various Apple software and design patents. These included the ‘bounce back’ effect of a smartphone interface when scrolling to the bottom of a page. It also concerned the patents for the pinch-to-zoom and tap-to-zoom movements.

Samsung was initially ordered to pay more than $1 billion in damages, but this was halved in a later verdict. Several lawsuits are still pending between Apple and Samsung over patent infringement.
