At the CES fair, Samsung is showing a Qled television with a screen diagonal of 85 “that can upscale images of any resolution to a 7680×4320 pixels. The Q9S television does this by using artificial intelligence.

According to Samsung, the AI technology is capable of automatically analyzing footage and upscaling it to a quality comparable to 8k images. It does not matter what the native resolution of the image material is and how it is played on the TV, for example via streaming or an external decoder. The South Korean manufacturer says this is coming because there are more and more screens on the market that support 4k and 8k, while the availability of content in these higher resolutions is still lagging.

For upscaling to 8k, the Q9S television uses a database that can analyze millions of images before scaling up low-resolution footage. This database is gradually being expanded, so that the system must become increasingly better at scaling certain content. In addition, the image processing is significantly increased, which should contribute to the reproduction of images that look natural, without affecting the gradations. Furthermore, for each scene, elements of image quality are categorized such as blacks or brightness, so that the contrast of the upscaled images is increased and the edges of objects appear sharp.

Samsung also uses algorithms to adjust the sound reproduction of the internal speakers, whereby the sound is adjusted based on a specific scene. For example, at a football match, the cheering of the spectators can be amplified, while at a music concert, the lower frequencies can be amplified.

According to a Forbes editor, the television has a fald backlight with a total of 10,000 different zones that can be dimmed independently of each other. The panel would furthermore be capable of a maximum brightness of 4000cd/m².

It is still unclear whether the televisions with this AI technology also have an HDMI 2.1 connection so that native 8k images can also be played. The first Q9S televisions with these algorithms will be available in the second half of 2018. Samsung is focusing on screens larger than 65″. There will in any case be an 85″ version of the television, but at the CES fair. there is also a 65″ version. Prices have not yet been announced.
