Samsung closes deal with DTS for better audio smart TVs
Electronics giant Samsung has announced a deal with American audio expert DTS. The manufacturer hopes to improve the sound quality of its smart TVs in the 7000 and 8000 series with new technology from DTS.
DTS, the former Digital Theater Systems, reports in a press release that it has entered into a partnership with Samsung. The Korean manufacturer will implement DTS audio technology in some smart TV models in its ‘2012 premium smart TV’ series. These would be new LED and plasma models in the 7000 and 8000 series.
The American audio company has developed a new technology that, in its own words, involves consumers ’emotionally more involved in the content on smart TVs’. The new technology that Samsung is going to build into its TVs is called Neo2:5. This technology is capable of converting any stereo audio signal into a 5.1 surround signal. According to DTS, no other company provides such technology. The company says that LG Electronics has also shown interest.
DTS audio technology was first used in 1993, in the movie Jurrassic Park, with Steven Spielberg and Universal Pictures investing money in the company. Today, more than 85 percent of movies released on Blu-ray have sound in DTS format.
