Samsung has bought the American company Joyent. Joyent is a cloud service provider and will continue to operate independently as a subsidiary of the South Korean conglomerate. Joyent competes with Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure, among others.

The acquisition gives Joyent the scale to compete against the big boys because of the bigger investments Samsung can make, the company reports. Together with the parent company, Joyent wants to offer ‘mobile and internet-of-things services’. Neither company has disclosed what Samsung specifically wants to achieve with the acquisition of Joyent.

Joyent is twelve years old. The board of directors of the company remains in place. The cloud company has its headquarters in Sausalito, a town near the American city of San Francisco.
