Samsung brings Galaxy Note 7 features to Galaxy S7 models

Samsung has released an update for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge with new features for Always On Display. The features are very similar to the capabilities that Always On Display had on the canceled Note 7.

The update extends Always On Display with new clock designs and the ability to display a custom image. The update also offers the option to show which music is being played. However, it is not possible to control the player from the screen. Always On Display supports S-view and Keyboard cover with the update. The update can be downloaded from Galaxy Apps.

Not all features of the Note 7 have been carried over. Some require the Samsung S Pen, which the S7 phones don’t have support for. The phones already had Always On Display, but with fewer features. The function shows information such as the time on the screen, even when the phone is on standby. On the Note 7, notifications from third-party apps can be shown on the screen, provided developers build in support for this. This capability has not been added to the S7 models.

The new capabilities were presumably added to persuade users who pre-ordered or purchased the Note 7 to buy a Galaxy S7 and not switch to another brand. The Note 7 has been taken off the market after it was found that the phone had a tendency to spontaneously combust.
