Samsung will introduce two new SSDs of 2TB each on Monday: the 850 Pro and 850 Evo. The drives use v-nand flash storage and come in a regular 2.5″ housing. The maximum storage capacity of the Pro and Evo SSDs has been 1TB until now.

Samsung reports this on its site. Both drives have an aluminum shell and consist of 128Gbit 3d-v-nand memory chips. The Pro has 2 bits mlc memory and the Evo 3 bits tlc. In both cases, the ‘3d memory’ consists of 32 stacked layers. The MHX controller has been upgraded and can handle 2TB. Samsung offers a ten-year warranty with the Pro version and half of that for the Evo variant. The advertised speeds and claimed runtimes are identical to the 1TB versions of the Pro and Evo. For example, Samsung claims the number of total bytes written with the Pro 300TB and with the Evo 150. The sequential read and write speeds with the Pro are 550MB/s and 520MB/s respectively. With the Evo, that is successively 540MB/s and 520MB/s.

Both drives support Samsung’s TurboWrite which should help improve data throughput by setting up a write buffer. The SSDs also support Rapid mode, where the RAM can be used to make things even smoother. Rapid only works under Windows, as it requires Samsung’s Magician software. Rapid is disabled by default.

The suggested retail price for the Evo is 860 euros and that of the Pro is 1080 euros.
