Samsung announces smaller Galaxy S22 and other S22 models

Samsung has announced the Galaxy S22 series of phones. The S22 is smaller than the S21, but also has a smaller battery. As expected, the S22 Ultra has a built-in stylus and takes over the function of the Galaxy Note series.

The Galaxy S22 measures 146×70.6mm, making it half a centimeter shorter than the 151×71.2mm S21. The device is 7.6 mm thick and weighs 168 grams. The smaller housing is probably due to the slightly smaller screen; the diagonal goes from 6.2″ to 6.1″ and the screen is also slightly shorter: 19.5:9 instead of 20:9.

The same goes for the S22+, which has a 6.6″ screen instead of the 6.7″ panel of its predecessor. In both cases, these are OLED screens with a resolution of 2340×1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 120Hz. Just like their predecessor, both phones have an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner behind that screen.

The primary camera has a 50-megapixel sensor and an f/1.8 lens. It is equipped with optical image stabilization. The second camera has an ultra-wide angle lens with an angle of view of 120 degrees and a 12-megapixel sensor. The telephoto camera offers 3x magnification over the primary camera with a 36-degree angle of view and an f/2.4 lens. That camera also has optical stabilization.

The S22 has a 3700mAh battery that can be charged with 25W. Samsung does not include an adapter. The S22+ has a 4500mAh battery that can be charged with 45W. Both phones come with 8GB Lpddr5 memory and with 128GB or 256GB UFS storage.

The S22 Ultra has a built-in stylus, the S-Pen. This means that in addition to the successor to the S21 Ultra, it is also the successor to the Note 20 Ultra from 2020. No Note device appeared last year. The phone has a 6.8″ screen, but the size differs from the 6.8″ panel of the S21 Ultra. The screen is slightly shorter, but a bit wider.

All these phones run on a Samsung Exynos 2200-soc, equipped with AMD RDNA2 GPU. The Xscale GPU is the first of its kind. It is also Samsung’s first soc on 4nm and on the Armv9 architecture.

The S22 comes out for prices from 849 euros, the S22+ costs from 1049 euros and the S22 Ultra should cost from 1249 euros. The S22 Ultra will be released in 2.5 weeks; the S22 and S22+ will follow in a month’s time.
