‘Samsung and Sony delivered an estimated 440,000 QD OLED televisions in 2022’
Research firm Omdia says that Samsung and Sony will have shipped a total of 440,000 QD OLED televisions during 2022. The lion’s share comes from Samsung. The Korean company came with the S95B and Sony introduced the A95K.
It is not clear what share of the 440,000 televisions comes from Samsung. Originally, a target of 600,000 units would have been set, but according to Omdia, Samsung has not exceeded the 400,000 QD OLED televisions delivered. The number of OLED televisions based on Woled panels from LG Display that were delivered last year was much higher and, according to the research agency, amounted to more than 6 million.
Omdia late see a graph that makes it clear that there was a significant difference between the deliveries of Sony and Samsung. According to the research agency, there was a significant price drop, which affected deliveries of the S95B, but also meant that fewer deliveries of the A95K were made. Samsung is also said to have sold fewer mini LED televisions due to the lower price of QD OLED televisions.
Over the course of 2022, the yield rate of the QD OLED panels became a lot better; according to the research agency, consumption could not keep up with panel production. If Samsung Electronics had not used all the panels for televisions, Samsung Display would have been left with too many panels. This combined with the set volume targets meant that Samsung was able to market the S95B at relatively favorable prices.
For the current year, Samsung has an internal target of supplying one million QD OLED TVs, Omdia said. The company would not have changed its target deliveries of mini LED TVs. This year there will probably be a lot more QD OLED televisions on the market, partly due to the production expansions at Samsung Display, but especially because more television manufacturers will be added. For example, the Chinese TCL will also introduce QD OLED TVs. This is expected to also apply to Sharp and TP Vision will release Philips TVs based on QD OLED panels.
