Samsung and Google make SMS successor in Messaging apps cross-compatible
Samsung and Google are aligning the implementation of SMS successor rcs in Android Messages and Samsung Messages. This allows the apps to exchange information such as notifications that others are typing.
The collaboration seems primarily intended for the business market, because thanks to the collaboration, companies can create rcs applications that work with both Android Messages and Samsung Messages, both Google and Samsung report. In addition, all functions of rcs will work together, allowing users to see together whether they have read messages and whether they are typing.
Rcs, rich communication service, has been a promise for years to follow up on the old text message, although apps like WhatsApp have now taken over the chat function years ago. Rcs offers pretty much the same features as chat apps, but it’s in phones messaging apps, so there’s a fallback to SMS if recipients can’t receive rcs messages.
For the chat feature to work in messaging apps, providers must support rcs. Many providers seem to be keeping an eye out for this, because support for rcs is slowly getting underway. Rcs has been around for about ten years, the current version Universal Profile 2.0 is from 2016.
