Samsung about Note 4 complaints: a gap around the screen is a feature
In a response to complaints from South Korean users about the presence of cracks in the screen of the Galaxy Note 4, Samsung says that this shortcoming has no impact on the functioning of the device. In the manual, the manufacturer says it is a manufacturing feature.
In the response, which TrustedReviews publishes, Samsung says that the reported shortcoming has “no impact on the functionality or quality of the Galaxy Note 4”. “We guarantee to our customers that all Galaxy Note 4 units meet our strict manufacturing and quality requirements,” said a company spokesperson. Samsung confirms the issue, but does not seem inclined to acknowledge that it is a problem.
It is not known how widespread the problem is. However, the cracks seem to be on the sides as well as on the top and bottom. If there is space between screen and screen edge, dust or other dirt can accumulate there and it also makes a device sensitive to moisture damage. The Note 4 is the second Samsung smartphone after the Galaxy Alpha to have a metal edge, a new design element for the South Korean company.
A message appeared on the South Korean site ITToday on Monday about complaints from buyers of the Galaxy Note 4. In the home country of Korea, the large smartphone was already released last Friday, while the rest of the market has to wait a few more weeks. Buyers say via Twitter, among other things, that the build quality is disappointing, referring to the gap between the screen and the edge. It would be wide enough to put two pieces of paper or a business card in between. Samsung will probably release the Galaxy Note 4 on October 17.
Update, 15:30: The crack is mentioned in the Note 4 manual, it turns out. “This gap is a necessary feature for manufacturing and some small parts may move or vibrate.” Samsung also warns that the gap may become larger. This notification was previously found in the manuals of the Galaxy Alpha, Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 3; however, it is the first time that complaints have been made about it.
