Sam Raimi is no longer a World of Warcraft movie director

Sam Raimi is no longer the director of the World of Warcraft movie in production at Legendary Pictures. It is not known who will take over the direction, but according to Raimi, Legendary Pictures has now started production.

At the screening of his directed Oz: The Great and Powerful, Raimi gave an interview to CraveOnline, in which he announced that he would no longer direct the film being made from World of Warcraft. “They won’t let me direct the World of Warcraft movie anymore,” Raimi said. “They had to switch to another director when I took the Oz job. They had to start production.” That would mean that film company Legendary Pictues has started production of the film, although it is not known who is now directing the film.

Legendary signed a deal with Blizzard in 2006 that allowed it to make a movie of World of Warcraft, the mmog that Blizzard released in 2004. The film was originally planned for 2009, but the latest estimate is that the film will hit the market in 2013. In 2009, Legendary announced that Sam Raimi, known for the The Evil Dead and Spider-Man films, would be directing. He collaborated with Robert Rodat on a script. Rodat previously wrote scripts for films such as Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot. Blizzard hinted that the film is set in the same time period as the game and that a human character is in the lead. The story in the film is thus told from the perspective of the Alliance, one of the two warring camps in the game.
