RuneScape Classic ends after 17 years
Developer Jagex pulls the plug on the classic mmorpg RuneScape Classic. According to the developer, advances in technology have rendered the game unmanageable and vulnerable to bots and other abuse.
Jagex released the original RuneScape in 2001 and for many gamers it was the first mmorpg they played. A sequel appeared in 2004, after which the game continued as RuneScape Classic. The game has not accepted new players for a while and the number of active players has decreased considerably.
However, the reason for the shutdown is due to the increasing number of bugs affecting the game and incompatibility of Jagex’s tools to address them. The truth is that bots and a lack of tools to provide security are serious problems.
In the coming months, players will still be able to log in to the game, but the servers will be permanently offline on August 6.
