Rumor: Zoom wants to start its own email and calendar services

Video conferencing service Zoom would develop its own alternatives to manage e-mails and agendas, claims The Information. The company may want to show the new services later this year.

The step would be necessary, because Zoom now depends on services from Microsoft and Google, among others, writes The Information. Many businesses and consumers using Zoom put the links to join a video meeting via Zoom in emails and calendar invites that run through those companies’ platform.

In addition, Microsoft and Google have their own video conferencing services: Teams and Meet. The companies are trying to build this into their own calendar services. For example, by default, Google creates a Meet link to click when scheduling a meeting in Google Calendar. Microsoft does not do this by default, but it can in Outlook.

It is still unknown what the e-mail and calendar services will offer compared to the competitors. Zoom has not yet commented on the rumor. The most logical moment for an announcement would be Zoomtopia’s own conference. It starts on November 8.
