Rumor: YouTube will launch new paid music streaming service in March 2018
YouTube will introduce a new paid music streaming service in March next year, Bloomberg sources claim. The service would be known internally as Remix. YouTube is said to have already reached an agreement with Warner Music.
The service would offer on-demand streaming of music, just like Spotify and Apple Music, but also use YouTube features, such as a link to video clips of the artists. According to Bloomberg sources familiar with YouTube’s plans,
It would thus be the third time that Google has attempted to gain a foothold in the paid music streaming market. It introduced Google Play Music in 2011, followed by YouTube Music Key in 2014. Those services eventually merged into YouTube Red, the current service that allows users to watch videos for a fee without advertising.
YouTube has in the past regularly come under fire from artists for lagging behind in revenue from videos of them being offered on the platform. YouTube has a significant gap to catch up with Spotify and Apple, which have 60 and 30 million paying subscribers respectively.
