Rumor: Upcoming Windows versions will be codenamed elements

Microsoft will codename elements in upcoming Windows versions, just like versions of Azure get now. The upcoming update is still called 19H1, but the update for October 2019 would be called Vanadium.

The fact that the Windows developers are adopting the codename method from Azure is probably because they are now part of the same Microsoft division, ZDNet reports. Recent Surface products also had code names referring to chemical elements.

Despite this, Microsoft is in a pinch after using Vanadium, according to ZDNet. The version for 2020 should then be called Chromium, but that is already the name of the open source version of Google’s Chrome browser. As a result, Microsoft would have chosen Vibranium, the material of the shield of Captain America.

Until now, Windows 10 updates were codenamed Threshold and Redstone, names from Halo and Minecraft. Microsoft will not comment on the code names. No functions are yet known from Vanadium and Vibranium.
