Rumor: Upcoming entry-level MacBook will get 13.3″ screen with 2560×1600 pixels
Apple will come in the second half of the year with an entry-level model in its MacBook series, which will have a 13.3 “screen with a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels. At least that is what DigiTimes claims.
The site thus confirms a message from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, which 9to5Mac reported last week. He was talking about the arrival of an entry-level MacBook Air. DigiTimes has proven to have sources within Taiwanese tech companies, but is also sometimes wrong with rumors.
Unlike Ming-Chi Kuo, DigiTimes is not talking about a MacBook Air, but about a MacBook. Given the claim that it is a 13.3″ screen, it seems to be a successor to the Air rather than a model in the MacBook line, which consists of laptops with a 12″ screen.
The Taiwanese site further claims that Apple wanted to purchase the screens from a Chinese supplier, but that it ran into undisclosed problems. Apple would then have decided to purchase screens from LG Display. It is not clear what effect this may have on the price.
LG Display would ship the screens in April and Apple could start mass production of the laptop in late May, early June. The manufacturer Quanta would take care of 70 percent of the production, while Hon Hai, or Foxconn, handles 30 percent. It is not known what type of panel it is. The 13.3-inch MacBook Air has always had a TN panel with a resolution of 1440×900 pixels, but it seems likely that Apple will switch to IPS, which has become commonplace among laptops in the Air’s price range.
