Rumor: Toshiba, Fujitsu and Vaio Consider Merging PC Branches
Toshiba, Fujitsu and Vaio are considering merging their PC industries into one, rumor has it from Japanese media. Vaio dismisses the rumor as “speculation.” Fujitsu previously announced that it would divest its PC activities.
The three Japanese companies would like to lay down the basis of the agreement this month, the Japanese business newspaper Nikkei claims based on anonymous sources. Nikkei has a good reputation for information about Japanese tech companies. The PC company to be created by the partnership should start in April 2016.
Vaio was reportedly set to become “the surviving company,” perhaps suggesting Fujitsu and Toshiba want to bring their PC parts to this Sony spin-off. Vaio calls the message speculation to Reuters, however, and according to the PC maker, there would have been no talks with any party about its PC business.
Toshiba is struggling with losses and has been considering exiting the PC market for some time now. It would be an opportunity for Vaio to expand internationally as it currently focuses mainly on the Japanese market. Fujitsu has already announced that it will split its PC business in early 2016.
