Rumor: TikTok is working on a paywall
TikTok is said to be working on an option for creators on the platform to put videos behind a paywall. The move should convince creators to publish on the platform, where monetization is now limited.
Video creators can charge money for seeing certain videos, writes The Information. The site does not mention whether it concerns a one-time contribution or the option to subscribe to a creator. TikTok does not deny developing a paywall, saying in a response that the company is “committed to finding new ways to deliver a valuable experience for TikTok’s creator community.”
In addition to the paywall, there would also be a new version of the Creator Fund, where video creators would be paid more than in the version of ten years ago. The company is also considering paying creators more for making longer videos. The current limit is ten minutes. TikTok became known and popular with short videos.
TikTok already has multiple ways for creators to make money, including splitting revenue from ads around videos from certain creators. Many social media companies try to lure video or photo creators with money-making schemes.
