Rumor: Sony will replace PS5 with a version with a removable disc tray at the end of this year

Sony would like to replace the PS5 with a new version at the end of this year. In addition, it would like to merge the version with and without a disc tray, making the disc tray removable. That would save on costs.

Insider Tom Henderson calls it a ‘gen 2’ of the PlayStation 5, so no more expensive Pro version or cheaper Slim variant. Sony would like to sell the new PlayStation 5 from September. Because the disc tray in the new version is a detachable module, Sony can put one variant into production and therefore reduce costs.

It’s still unclear if the detachable disc tray would fit the current version of the PS5 without a disc tray. Some people bought it over the years because it was the only version available. If the new disk tray were compatible, they could buy it separately, for example.

The new PS5 would differ little from the current one in terms of design, Henderson reports. Sony has already released a new version of the PS5 a few times with a changed internal layout. The last time was last year, when Sony modified the cooling and motherboard.
