Rumor: Sony will add Discord voice chat to PS5 ‘in the coming months’
Sony is reportedly adding support for Discord voice conversations to the PlayStation 5 “in the coming months,” insider Tom Henderson claims, citing own sources. Sony previously announced a partnership with Discord.
Sony expects to add the chat platform to its console ‘before the end of this year’, writes Tom Henderson for Computer. An exact release date has not yet been announced. Discord voice chat would be added to version 7.00 of the PS5 operating system. With the integration, PlayStation users would be able to chat with Discord users regardless of the platform they are on. Discord is available on PCs and smartphones and is also coming to Xbox consoles.
Sony announced last year that it will partner with Discord. The company then said it wanted to integrate “the Discord and PlayStation experiences” early this year. PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan said the partnership should make it easier to communicate with friends, groups and communities. In February, it became possible to link PSN accounts to Discord, but the service itself was not yet available on PlayStation consoles. That would soon change.
Henderson is a well-known gaming industry insider who has also shared accurate information about Sony in the past. The leaker previously shared information about Sony’s gaming monitors and headsets for PCs and the PS5 early on. Henderson also reported in June that Sony would come out with a customizable PS5 controller, which turned out to be true last week.
