According to the Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Nintendo will release a smaller and cheaper version of its Switch console in the fall. The new model also has a dock function for use with a TV. A more powerful model will come later.

The cheaper version would mainly be intended for use in handheld mode, but the function to connect the Switch to a TV is not missing, writes Gematsu. The website is based on a Japanese article by Nikkei behind a paywall.

Earlier, there were rumors about the arrival of two new Switch versions and it was suggested that the cheaper small variant might not have a dock function. According to the Japanese article, an improved Switch variant is also being worked on, but will not be released until later. Since the cheaper version will be released in the fall, it seems likely that the other version will appear next year.

The development of this new model, which is referred to as a next-generation device, is said to be still in a phase where several things are being tried. Rumors from The Wall Street Journal and Eurogamer in late March, who spoke with suppliers and developers, indicated that the new model will at least be more powerful.
