Rumor: Sharp will come with 4k screens for smartphones in 2016

Sharp would like to start making 4k screens for phones in 2016. The Japanese screen manufacturer would like to do this at the insistence of Chinese manufacturers, who are asking for screens with increasingly higher resolutions.

The first test production will take place as early as next year, reports the Chinese Feng.com. The presumed resolution of the screen will be 3860×2140 pixels, the same 4k resolution as UHD TVs often use: they then have an aspect ratio of 16:9, as is common with smartphones.

The screen would have a diagonal of between 5″ and 6″. With a 6″ screen, the display comes out at 735 pixels per inch; the highest pixel density used to date is against 540 pixels per inch on the LG G3 and 565 pixels per inch on the Motorola Droid Turbo.

The demand for 4k displays for smartphones would come from Chinese manufacturers, who tend to focus on specs that do well in marketing, such as processors with more cores, cameras with more megapixels and displays with higher resolutions. It is unknown whether other screen manufacturers are also working on 4k displays for smartphones.
