Rumor: Samsung to build 3nm chip factory in Texas
Samsung is reportedly planning to invest $10 billion in building a chip factory in Austin, Texas. Bloomberg writes. In the future, that factory should produce 3nm chips, among other things.
Samsung is in talks to find a suitable location for the factory, Bloomberg reports based on conversations with anonymous sources. The plans for the factory are still at an early stage, so many things can still change, but for now the plan is to start building a factory in 2022. The factory is expected to open in 2023. The entire project would involve an investment of $10 billion.
According to sources spoken to Bloomberg, the planned factory is to use extreme ultraviolet lithography for the production of chips. In a response, Samsung says that no decisions have yet been made about the project. Last year, Samsung announced an investment of $103 billion to become the largest processor maker by 2030.
With the construction plans for the factory, Samsung may be able to make good use of all kinds of financial incentives from the US government that aim to bring more high-tech production to the US in the competition with China. The Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC is also going to build a factory in the US, in Arizona. That factory is aimed at producing 5nm chips and should be ready in 2024.
