Rumor: Samsung starts production of three-sided screen for upcoming smartphone
Samsung has reportedly started production of its curved three-sided screen for an upcoming smartphone. The screen would not only be on the front of the device, but would continue over the sides of the device.
Because Samsung can still make few copies of its curved AMOLED screens on a plastic substrate, it will be a device that will be available on a limited basis; presumably it is a successor to last year’s Galaxy Round, which only appeared in South Korea.
The rumor comes from ZDNet Korea, which relies on anonymous sources. The site has published many rumors about Samsung in recent years, many but not all of which turned out to be true. For example, the site was the first to publish about the water resistance of the Galaxy S5 and about the existence of the Gear Fit with its curved amoled screen.
Samsung, which previously filed a patent for a device with a screen on three sides, previously showed a prototype of a phone with the screen extending over the side. Those sides could be used to display notifications. Samsung and competitor LG have been busy for several years marketing the first products with curved screens.
