Rumor: Samsung is still working on a folding phone with a 6.7-inch screen
Samsung’s next folding phone will fold horizontally like a clamshell phone, sources from financial services company Bloomberg claim. Samsung could unveil the device early next year, depending on the success of the Fold.
Sources familiar with Samsung’s plans report to Bloomberg that the company is still working on its second folding phone behind closed doors. The phone will have a horizontal folding line. This will make the device somewhat resemble an old-fashioned flip phone. This corresponds to rumors from the beginning of this year that Samsung is working on two different folding phones. The Fold has now been unveiled.
The second foldable smartphone will have an inner screen with a screen diagonal of 6.7 “, with a hole for the front camera as with the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10. The back will contain two cameras, which also work as a selfie camera when the device is closed Also, the device should be thinner and more affordable than the current Galaxy Fold.
Due to the horizontal folding line, the device will have a relatively normal, rectangular shape when unfolded. Current folding phones can be folded vertically, which means they have a relatively wide screen. This can sometimes be a problem as apps need to be modified to make the most of the extra width.
Furthermore, according to sources, Samsung is working with American designer Thom Browne. This is to make the upcoming device more attractive to people who are more interested in ‘fashion, luxury and status’. The product is rumored to contain high-end hardware and should also appeal to fans of the old-fashioned flip phone. Samsung itself does not make any statements about the development of unannounced products.
Foldable smartphones have had a rough start. For example, the Huawei Mate X was recently delayed. In addition, Samsung itself had to recall the Galaxy Fold at the start of sales due to a vulnerability in the screen. The Galaxy Fold will be re-released this month. Samsung is now taking pre-registrations for the Fold again. According to the sources, Samsung makes the introduction of a second folding phone dependent on the success of the first Galaxy Fold.
