Rumor: Samsung is expanding dram production
Samsung is working on renovations in two factories to increase the production of dram. That reports ET News. This concerns a total of 30,000 wafer starts per month more. Despite this, it seems that the prices of dram will continue to rise in the coming year.
Samsung is undergoing renovations at its factories in Hwasung and Pyeongtaek in South Korea, ETNews reports. That adds up to an additional 60,000 dram wspm per month, but it is also converting a current dram production line in Hwasung so that the manufacturer can produce camera sensors there, bringing the total addition to 30,000. In total, all manufacturers together produce about 1.1 million wspms monthly based on wafers.
From 2019, Samsung can produce an additional 235,000 dram units. The South Korean manufacturer has not confirmed the information, making the figures unverifiable. ETNews often has reliable information from anonymous sources around factories in South Korea.
According to ETNews, the increase in Samsung’s production is not enough to push prices in the market in the coming year. Those prices have more than doubled in the past year. After that, prices would fall again. The South Korean manufacturer is not the only one to ramp up production. Micron has indicated that it will no longer process wafers, but want to switch to a smaller node to be able to extract more memory chips from wafers. SK Hynix does want to increase the wafer capacity.
