Rumor: Samsung is also putting facial recognition in Galaxy S8 in addition to iris scanner

In addition to an iris scanner and a fingerprint scanner, Samsung would like to apply a third method in the Galaxy S8 for biometric security. The device may receive a face scanner, which must unlock the device in 0.01 seconds.

As a result, users can unlock the device by looking at it, South Korean site The Investor writes, based on an article by the Korea Economic Daily that has not appeared online. The facial recognition is necessary due to the limitations of the iris scanner, which does not always work properly due to the technology used. Samsung already put an iris scanner in the Galaxy Note 7 last year.

Facial recognition has been standard in Android since Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and Google has now put it in Smart Lock. That is the collection of unlock methods that Google offers via Play Services. However, this is not possible in 0.01 seconds and depends on the quality of the front camera.

Samsung will present the Galaxy S8 on March 29 during an event in New York. According to recent rumors, there will be two versions. The regular version has a 5.8 “OLED screen, while there is also a Plus version with a 6.2” screen and a dual camera. Due to the thin screen edges and 18.5:9 ratio of the displays, the housing of both devices would not or hardly be larger than last year’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge.
