Samsung would like to use its own AI model Gauss partly locally on its Galaxy S24 phones. AI services are available on phones, but many run on a server and require an internet connection.

Samsung recently announced Gauss and according to Korea Times the intention is to run part of the AI model locally on Galaxy S24 phones to generate images or drafts of emails. Digital assistant Bixby will also get generative AI features to help understand the context of commands.

The step sounds logical. When announcing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Qualcomm emphasized that the SoC is suitable for running language models with billions of parameters locally. Some of the Galaxy S24 models worldwide will probably run on that Soc. Another part will probably have Samsung’s own Exynos SoC. The manufacturer can adapt its own SoC to the requirements of the AI model.

AI is playing an increasingly important role in phone software functions. Google emphasized this with its Pixel 8 phones, which can, among other things, separate audio tracks and have the ability to move objects in photos. Some of Google’s AI features, such as night video enhancement, run on a server and require an internet connection. It’s unknown if Samsung will split AI features in the same way.
