Rumor: Samsung Exynos socs with AMD GPUs coming within six months

Samsung would like to release its first Exynos socs with built-in AMD GPUs this spring or next summer. It has been known for some time that the next generation of Exynos-socs will receive an AMD GPU, but that may appear earlier than expected.

It concerns the next generation of Exynos 1xxx and 2xxx-socs, reports IceUniverse. The current generation is called Exynos 1080 and Exynos 2100. In addition, the 2100 can be found in the European version of the Galaxy S21 phones, while the Vivo X60 Pro has the Exynos 1080.

If so, then Samsung would release two high-end socs in a year for the first time in years. That also happened before with the release of a Galaxy S at the beginning of the year and a Galaxy Note in the summer, but in recent years they have invariably had the same soc.

Samsung fan site SamMobile is betting that the manufacturer may want to use the new Exynos soc with AMD GPU in its folding smartphone Galaxy Z Fold3. It should be out next summer. Samsung and AMD have been working together since 2019. The South Korean electronics maker already expressed the expectation that the first Exynos socs with AMD GPUs would appear in 2021.

Qualcomm has been using Adreno GPUs in socs for years. Adreno, an anagram of Radeon, is Qualcomm’s GPU line and ATi helped Qualcomm with that GPU development in the early years. Qualcomm took over AMD’s mobile GPU division in 2009, after which it continued to work independently on the graphics chips.
