The American processor designer Qualcomm would like to present its new soc Snapdragon 660 next week. According to rumors, it would be the first soc for midrange smartphones with Qualcomm’s own Kryo processor cores.

Qualcomm has invited Chinese media to a meeting next Tuesday and Anzhuo speculates that it is the Snapdragon 660. That is obvious, because Qualcomm has already launched a high-end soc with the Snapdragon 835 this year, but a successor for the Snapdragon 650 and 652 is not there yet. The invitation does not specify what the meeting is about.

The Snapdragon 660 is rumored to be a soc with eight Kryo 280 processor cores. That is a Qualcomm modified variant of ARM’s Cortex A73 microarchitecture. The GPU would be an Adreno 512, while the soc would also support lpddr4 memory at 1866MHz, something that is not yet possible with the current 600 series socs. Qualcomm would have the 660 made on a 14nm process, while Samsung produces the Snapdragon 835 on 10nm.

If Qualcomm presents the Snapdragon 660, it will probably appear in smartphones soon. The American processor maker also has the 626 as a new soc in the 600 series, a slightly modified version of the 625 that is included in the Moto Z Play and Lenovo P2.
