Rumor: Qualcomm is working on gaming smartphone under its own name
According to a new rumor, chip designer Qualcomm would work on a gaming smartphone under its own name, with the cooperation of Asus. The American company would like to deliver half a million copies per year.
Asus will design the phone, while Qualcomm will provide the soc and software, Digitimes reports. Qualcomm and Asus will jointly purchase components such as memory and camera modules, which means that Asus can obtain components cheaper than if it only purchases.
Together, both companies would like to deliver one million copies, half each. Asus has been making gaming phones under its own name, ROG Phone, for some time. Three models have already appeared in this line, the most recent this summer.
Qualcomm and Asus have not responded to the rumor. The chip designer has an event scheduled for December 1 for the presumed announcement of the Snapdragon 875. Qualcomm does not release its own smartphones, but it does make a reference device for testing every year.
