Rumor: Qualcomm is letting Wear produce 5100 wearables socs at 4nm
Qualcomm will bake its new generation Snapdragon Wear socs at 4 nanometers instead of the planned 5nm. That writes WinFuture. There will be two variants of the 5100-socs. According to the German website, these are produced by Samsung.
WinFuture claims to have secured the first details of the unannounced Snapdragon Wear 5100 socs and states that the US company recently decided to have the 5100 socs for wearables produced at 4 nanometers instead of the planned 5 nanometers. This would mainly benefit energy consumption. Production would take place in the Samsung factories, according to the WinFuture journalist.
According to WinFuture, the new Snapdragon 5100-soc will come in two variants: the regular 5100 and the 5100+. Both chipsets are said to have four Cortex A53 cores with a speed of 1.7GHz. That is as fast as the current generation Snapdragon 4100-socs. The GPU is reportedly an Adreno 702 that runs at 700MHz. Both chipsets support lpddr4x ram and eMMC5.1 flash. The maximum working memory is 4 GB.
According to WinFuture, the regular 5100 chipset is produced via the so-called molded laser package, so that the soc and the energy management controller remain separate components. The 5100+ is baked via the molded embedded package. This ensures that the soc and the energy management controller are integrated in one component. The 5100+ variant also gets an economical co-processor, the QCC5100-soc, which can take care of simple tasks. This frugal processor also includes a machine learning core. The Wear 5100 platform supports Bluetooth 5.2, LTE and WLAN 802.11c over 5GHZ according to WinFuture. 5G seems to be missing. The socs will be able to run both Wear OS and Android.
